# Digital PPE: what it is and what it's for

> What digital PPE is, how it complements traditional PPE, and why privacy by design and compliance with Brazil's NRs and LGPD are part of the concept.

Hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection. Traditional personal protective equipment (PPE) protects the worker's body against physical hazards, and decades of safety culture have made it non-negotiable in any plant. Digital PPE grows out of that same culture, with a different mission: protection through information.

## What is digital PPE?

[Digital PPE](/en/glossary/digital-ppe/) is protective equipment that connects workers to the operation. Instead of creating a physical barrier against a hazard, it shortens the distance between people in the field and the people who can help: it records location in real time, puts an emergency button within the worker's reach, and turns presence in each area into data that risk management can use.

At PHYGITALL, digital PPE takes the form of a smart badge, the [Smartbadge](/en/products/smartbadge/), built for the day-to-day realities of industry. There is also a variant for explosive atmospheres, the Smartbadge with Ex certification, which brings the same protection into hazardous areas.

## A complement, not a replacement

The comparison that matters is between an operation with the connection layer and one without it. Hard hats still protect against impact. Gloves still protect hands. What digital PPE adds is something no physical barrier delivers: a faster response.

When a worker presses the emergency button, the control room receives the call with the exact location and sends help right away. Without that layer, the same call would depend on a radio, a phone, or someone nearby. In an emergency, that difference is measured in minutes, and minutes decide outcomes.

Digital PPE also works where cell phones don't. Connected to a private LoRaWAN network that covers the entire plant, it keeps workers within reach of the control room in metal buildings, remote areas, and dead zones, exactly the places where help tends to take longest to arrive.

## Privacy by design

The first question any good digital PPE design has to answer is about privacy. PHYGITALL's answer is built into the product: the Smartbadge does not record audio or video. The device has no camera and no microphone that listens in.

Digital PPE collects the minimum needed for its safety purpose: location, presence events by area, and emergency calls. That scope is decided when the product is designed, not configured later, which is why the approach is called privacy by design. Workers know what the badge does and what it doesn't, and that transparency is part of what keeps the team in the field on board.

## Compliance with Brazil's NRs and LGPD

Digital PPE operates within two frameworks. On the workplace safety side, that means Brazil's NR safety standards (NRs): presence, alert, and response records become auditable evidence, which helps demonstrate compliance during audits and reconstruct the timeline of any incident. On the personal data side, it means the LGPD (Brazil's data protection law): a defined purpose, minimal collection, and transparency with the data subject are requirements the product has met since it was first designed.

In practice, the occupational health and safety (OHS) team gets a risk management tool based on real data, and the legal team finds data processing that is lean, documented, and in line with the law.

## From concept to the field

Digital PPE is the entry point to connected worker technology. Once deployed, it feeds the operation's safety workflows, such as emergency response and [Safeline](/en/solutions/safeline/) alerts, and grows as the operation matures. The rollout starts small, with a defined group and area, and expands based on results measured in the field.

It is the same logic that made traditional PPE standard practice: protecting the people who keep industry running. Digital PPE adds one more layer: protection that now warns and responds.
