Connected worker
What is a connected worker?
Connected worker is the concept of linking industrial workers to their company's digital systems through wearable devices, such as smart badges. That connection provides real-time location, an emergency button, and direct communication with people in the field, improving worker protection and operational visibility across the plant.
The term gained traction with Industry 4.0 and describes a change in the worker’s role inside the plant: workers stop being invisible to the company’s digital systems and become part of them. Wearable sensors, dedicated networks, and data platforms form an ecosystem in which every person in the field can call for help, receive alerts, and be found within seconds when something unexpected happens.
In practice, connected worker technology shows up where operations are most demanding: maintenance turnarounds with thousands of people on site at the same time, refineries with hazardous areas, and sprawling plants where neither radio nor cell coverage reaches every corner. The worker wears a lightweight device, such as a smart badge, and goes about their routine as usual. The infrastructure around them does the work.
For workplace safety, the impact is on response time. An emergency call that used to depend on someone noticing the problem now reaches the control room right away, with the exact location of the person who needs help. Every event generates auditable evidence, which strengthens risk management and compliance with Brazil’s NR safety standards (NRs).
Connected worker technology exists to protect people. Reputable devices in this category do not record audio or video, data handling follows the LGPD (Brazil’s data protection law), and the only data that moves through the system is what protection and operational visibility require.
PHYGITALL applies the concept with the Smartbadge, the smart badge with Ex certification that already connects more than 5,000 workers at Petrobras in Itaboraí. The badge combines an emergency button, real-time location, and direct communication with people in the field.
